More than just being your safe space, your home should show your personality, bear your story. Every room should carry your essence, show your creativity, hold the scent of you in the slightest and grandest of details. I love how different designs in a home work to fluently speak the owner’s personality without them breathing a word. Here are some of my favourite styles used in designing a home.

Characterised Eclectic Home Décor

There is some intrigue in eclectic designs. This is what makes it one of my favourite designs. If I were to describe eclectic design, I would term it as bold, blended, beautiful yet fluid. A great eclectic design pulls from different eras and blends the pieces into one fluid style that yells “personality”! These designs combine colour accents, patterns, decorative elements and textures to come up with a design that speaks.  

To successfully achieve an eclectic theme, you need to open your eye to the not-so-obvious looks; pick out a vintage vanity table, mirrors with characterised frames, bold wall accents and blend these with modern rags seats for instance. This will exude a classy depth that can only be achieved in this design. If you’re drawn to unique furniture pieces you can pick out a few, then combine these with a modern wallpaper or strong wall colour that can then be accentuated by decorative accessories. A great idea I found was to use one bold colour and fill the look with bright accents and patterns that blend with the colour while highlighting the main pieces.

Vintage Designs That Breathe Life into Your Home

Vintage home décor designs carry a warmth born from the history that they hold. Since each piece is unique, vintage designs ensure that your space is one of a kind marking it with your unique personality. They carry a charm that is undeniable and so inviting you have no choice but to relax into it. I personally enjoy vintage designs that showcase classic craftmanship in the furniture, the frames and the art. To me, most vintage pieces are art, and once blended and placed in one room, they carry a depth of history that is undeniable.

A common favourite vintage design is the rustic design. This makes use of aged or distressed wood that is blended with antique accessories and softly accented colours for the best results. The root of the vintage home décor design is to provide a feel of familiarity that provides comfort. It takes away the edge and tension that new age pieces can carry and replace it with a more comfortable feel that lets you breathe easy, rest, relax. For instance, you can pick a distressed cabinet, combine it with a few historic art pieces on the wall, simple designed furniture with bare wood and finish it off with bare floors for the perfect rustic feel. The simplicity of rustic home décor allows your mind space to open up and get creative in all other aspects of your life. This is why when it comes to vintage designs, the rustic design is my absolute favourite!

I’ve seen designers use layered fabrics, creative finishes and shapes to create a fluent design that flows from the furniture, to the accessories and bounce off the walls. The use of accents of colour also works wonders especially in small spaces. You can give a small office a complete design face-lift by simply making full use of the walls to make it look larger, brighter and more sophisticated. Whether you choose a vintage look that could make use of vintage mirrors, or an eclectic design that could make use of bolder colour accents, your walls will play a big role in creating the perfect look or your small office space.
